Basic Crochet Dishcloth/Washcloth

Yarn: Lily's Sugar N'Cream is shown but can be made in any worsted weight or non-worsted weight. I just suggest that you change the hook size if you have trouble getting the hook into the stitches.

Gauge: Not important

Hook size: US G/4.00 mm

Ch20 loosely

Rows:
turn and ch2, dc into 3rd stitch and ever remaining stitch.

Repeat until desired size.

I made this pattern for a class I am teaching and since everyone seems to copyright their stuff so you have to ask permission and pay them to use their pattern in a class, I just made up my own!

Those look great and just FYI, if you ever want to use any of the patterns I have for free on my pattern blog (they are mostly knitted, but one crochet so far) you go right ahead, no need to ask, if they are free that means they can be used by who ever when ever for what ever if you ask me. How long have you been teaching classes?

I'm pretty new to crochet and have been looking for a pattern like this. What do you have to do to "turn"? I've tried several things and am not getting it.
Thanks!
Linda

to turn means to flip the fabric so you see the other side.

Do you have a photo somewhere? I can't tell what is wrong unless I see it.

I tried to learn to crochet and just can't seem to get it right. It starts out ok but soon my pieces all look they are smiling instead of being straight....what am I doing wrong?

I don't know. I am a "must see it to know what is wrong" sort of person. I can't tell from the description.

Weber, it sounds like you are dropping stitches as you go. Try counting the number of stitches on your first row vs. the number in the last row you made and I'll bet you find there are fewer. This commonly happens on the turn but depends on what stitch(es) you are using.

Weber could also be tightening stitches. If you're not dropping any, try switching to a larger hook, or relax your pull on the thread.

I think the problem most people have when turning is you have to skip the first stitch when you start a new row. For example, when you chain three and start your next row, don't stitch in the first one. Your chain three will take the place of that one. Start in the second available stitch. I have made this mistake in my early days of crocheting. Always make a habit of counting your stiches to make sure you are doing the same each row. Hope this helps

Good job MamaMay.
My daughter has a web site, showing home spun yarn. She dyes and spins her yarn. I admire anyone that takes the effort to crochet or knit items. Visit her web site if you like: Lambsears on Etsy

this doesn't make any sense!
"turn and ch2, dc into 3rd stitch and ever remaining stitch." what does ever remaining stitch mean? and why would you need to ch 2 when you've just finished ch 20. I think you've left out part of the instructions!

MamaMay said...

Anon: Because it is supposed to be 20 across. The rows part is for EVERY row, not just the fist row (though that does include the 1st row...

I just finished a dishcloth using your pattern, it was really fast! Thanks for the simple pattern :)

Hello,

Thinking about doing this with a Girl Guide group (9-11 year-olds). How much yarn is needed to do one square dishcloth with this pattern? I have no idea if one ball will do a cloth or if more yarn would be needed.

Thanks

It should use about .4 to .5 of a ball of lily sugar and cream. To save money it might work out better to buy a big cone and make balls. I would eer on too much.

Sorry, not to critique your work but the wording of this pattern is kind of weird and that is why people are confused "what does turn mean?" I believe it should be worded something like this:
chain 22
R1: dc in 3rd chain, dc in next 19 st,
R2-(until you reach your desired length): ch 2, turn, dc in every st until end
I'm just trying to help you with your pattern building. Since I am an advanced crocheter I get this pattern but some may not. Thanks I was trying to find a gauge on how big I should make my dishcloths

Good Morning..I am a beginner. I realize you chain 2, then go into the next stitch but is the chain counted as one of your stitches.

Great idea! Last week I crocheted some tulle dish scrubbers, but never thought of crocheting dishcloths. I prefer cleaning with homemade cleaning products and I think these cloths are the perfect addition. These basic dish- and washcloths are going to be my weekend project the next few weeks. Thank you for sharing!
